The problem with our current plurality voting system is twofold 1) A popular candidate whom voters would re-elect in a general election against any possible opponent can be primaried and excluded from the general election. 2) Worse yet because of vote splitting and the center squeeze under plurality voting that system discriminates against centrist candidates and our independent voters who represent a plurality, if not a majority, of voters. That seriously reinforces the excessive politicization of public policy issues we are experiencing. A fairer voting system could significantly help to mitigate these two problems<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Approval\u00a0Voting<\/strong>\u00a0is\u00a0a\u00a0fairer\u00a0voting\u00a0system.<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0Under\u00a0Approval\u00a0Voting,\u00a0voters in multi-candidate\u00a0elections\u00a0are\u00a0allowed to give one\u00a0vote\u00a0each to\u00a0the\u00a0candidate or\u00a0candidates\u00a0they\u00a0support\u00a0 with\u00a0the\u00a0candidate\u00a0having\u00a0the\u00a0most support winning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Approval Voting eliminates the wasted vote, the spoiler role, and levels the voting field for 3rd parties. As such it can promote fairer elections and can satisfy two key criteria for a fair voting system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A good voting system for third parties should do two things: 1)<\/strong> Tend to elect the most representative candidate given voters’<\/strong> preferences and 2) Level the voting field for third parties. RCV<\/strong> does neither.
